10 Laundry Mistakes That Ruin Your Clothes

Most clothes don’t wear out — they get ruined. Faded colours, stretched collars, shrunken sweaters, and mystery holes usually come down to a handful of habits repeated week after week. Here’s what’s quietly destroying your wardrobe, and exactly how to stop it.

You spend good money on clothes. Then a single wash cycle turns a favourite shirt into something two sizes smaller, or leaves a white t-shirt looking permanently grey. In almost every case, it isn’t bad luck — it’s a repeatable mistake.

Below are the ten we see most often at our Dubai facility, along with what’s actually happening to the fabric and the simple fix for each one.

1

Overloading the Machine

Cramming one more towel in feels efficient. It isn’t. Clothes need room to move through the water — that movement is what actually lifts dirt out of the fibres. In a packed drum, garments just press against each other and the detergent never circulates properly.

Worse, an overloaded drum puts strain on seams and stretches necklines. It also leaves detergent residue behind, which is what makes clothes feel stiff and look dull over time.

The fixFill the drum to about three-quarters. You should be able to fit your hand flat on top of the load with room to spare. If you're pushing clothes down to close the door, split it into two washes.
2

Using Too Much Detergent

More soap does not mean cleaner clothes. Past a certain point, the machine simply can’t rinse it all out. That leftover detergent stays in the fabric, attracts fresh dirt, and builds up into a dull film — the reason dark clothes start looking chalky and towels stop absorbing water.

It also irritates skin. If anyone in your home has itchy patches after wearing freshly washed clothes, detergent residue is a likely culprit.

The fixUse the measuring cap, not a guess. For a normal load, most concentrated detergents need far less than people assume. If your clothes feel stiff or smell faintly soapy when dry, you're using too much — cut the dose by a third.

6

Over-Drying on High Heat

That lint you empty from the dryer filter is your clothes, breaking down. High heat weakens fibres, causes shrinkage, damages elastic in waistbands and underwear, and makes prints crack and peel.

Running a load until it’s bone dry is the worst offender. Fabric that’s completely dried out becomes brittle and wrinkles far more.

The fixUse medium or low heat and pull clothes out while they're still slightly damp — they'll finish drying on a hanger with fewer wrinkles. Air-dry anything with elastic, prints, or stretch.
7

Rubbing Stains Instead of Blotting

The instinct is to scrub hard. That’s exactly wrong. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the weave, spreads it outward, and roughs up the fibres — leaving a permanent dull patch even after the stain itself comes out.

On delicate fabrics like silk or satin, aggressive rubbing can lift the surface texture entirely and the damage can’t be reversed.

The fixBlot with a clean cloth, working from the outside of the stain inward so it doesn't spread. Cold water for most stains. For wine, oil, ink, or anything on a garment you care about, stop and let a professional handle it.
8

Hanging Knitwear to Dry

Wet wool and knit fabrics are heavy. Hang them on a hanger and gravity does the rest — shoulders develop pointed bumps, the body stretches long, and sleeves end up several centimetres longer than they started.

Unlike shrinkage, stretching is usually permanent. The fibres have been pulled out of shape while wet and they set that way.

The fixDry knitwear flat. Lay it on a towel, gently reshape it to its original dimensions, and let it air dry. Never wring it out — press the water out instead.
9

Skipping the Zip-and-Button Check

An open zip is essentially a row of small metal teeth spinning around your drum at speed. It snags knitwear, pulls threads out of shirts, and puts holes in anything lightweight sharing the load.

Buttons have the opposite problem — leaving shirts buttoned strains the buttonholes and pops buttons off as the fabric twists.

The fixZip everything up, unbutton shirts, and turn dark jeans and printed tees inside out. Put bras, delicates, and anything with straps into a mesh laundry bag.
10

Machine-Washing Dry-Clean-Only Items

This is the mistake that causes the most expensive damage. Suits lose their structure and the inner canvas bubbles. Silk loses its sheen and develops water rings. Wool coats shrink two sizes. Beaded or embellished pieces come apart entirely.

These garments aren’t labelled dry-clean-only to be difficult. The construction — linings, interfacing, structured shoulders — simply cannot survive water agitation.

Once it's done, it's doneShrinkage, bubbled linings, and lost structure cannot be reversed. A single wrong wash can end the life of a suit or gown worth thousands.
The fixSend suits, silk, wool coats, evening wear, and anything beaded or structured to a dry cleaner. For wedding dresses and designer pieces in particular, specialist hand cleaning is the only safe option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes, if you catch it immediately. Soak the garment in cool water with hair conditioner for 30 minutes, then gently stretch it back to shape while damp and dry it flat. This works best on wool and only when the shrinkage is mild — severe felting is permanent.
Usually detergent residue or fabric softener build-up. Run an empty hot cycle with two cups of white vinegar to clean the machine, then rewash the affected items using half your usual detergent and no softener.
Every 1–2 months in Dubai. Humidity encourages mould in the door seal and detergent drawer. Run an empty hot cycle with vinegar or a machine cleaner, and wipe the rubber gasket dry after each wash.
As soon as possible — ideally the same day. Most stains become significantly harder to remove after 24 hours, and heat from drying sets them permanently. Never put a stained garment in the dryer.
Yes. Fabric softener coats fibres in a waxy residue that reduces absorbency in towels and traps odour in activewear. Skip it for both — use white vinegar in the rinse instead if you want softness.
If the care label says dry clean only, if the item is structured (suits, blazers, coats), or if it’s expensive enough that a mistake would hurt. Wedding dresses, silk, beaded pieces, and leather should always go to a specialist.

The Bottom Line

None of these fixes take extra time once they become habit. Check the label, don’t overfill, wash cold, and get the load out promptly — that alone prevents most of the damage we see.

And for the pieces where a mistake would be expensive — suits, silk, wool, wedding dresses, anything beaded — the safest move is simply not to risk it at home.
